School Hut

School Hut

Overview

As climbers depart Third Cave Camp, they set out across Mount Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude wilderness, heading toward School Hut. The day’s trail offers expansive views of Kilimanjaro’s rugged alpine desert, with the looming presence of Kibo Peak to the west and Mawenzi to the east, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop. There is a steady ascent to reach The Saddle, a vast and surreal lunar landscape nestled between the twin peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The barren, open expanse of The Saddle contrasts starkly with the verdant lower slopes and serves as one of the most remarkable features of Kilimanjaro. From here, the group continues upward, gradually approaching the School Hut Campsite at 4,900 meters in the early afternoon. Upon arrival, climbers settle into camp, where they spend the remainder of the afternoon resting and preparing for the upcoming summit attempt. Guides lead a briefing on the challenging night ahead, and climbers enjoy a hearty meal to fuel up for the final push to Uhuru Peak. This day provides both a mental and physical adjustment, setting the stage for the summit journey to come.
