Overview
On the first day of the Kilimanjaro adventure, climbers depart early from their accommodations in Moshi or Arusha, driving westward through the lush Tanzanian countryside toward Londorosi Gate. Here, they complete the necessary registration and formalities, preparing for the climb ahead. After check-in, they continue by jeep through a beautiful, dense artificial forest—an area planted to protect Kilimanjaro’s natural ecosystem. Towering eucalyptus, pine, and cypress trees create a unique green canopy, offering glimpses of wildlife and rich birdlife along the way.
The jeep ride ends at the Morum Barrier where climbers start their hike, officially beginning the Shira Route. As they ascend toward Shira 1 Camp, the scenery opens up to sweeping views of the Shira Plateau and Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. The trail winds through grassy moorlands dotted with unique flora like giant lobelias and giant Senecio, and the cooler, thinner air hints at the altitude ahead. Shira 1 Camp, set at around 3,550 meters, provides a serene spot to rest and acclimate while enjoying expansive views of the plateau under the wide African sky. This first day is both exciting and humbling, giving climbers a taste of the beauty and diversity that Kilimanjaro offers.
